Canada's nursing sisters came from all walks of life. Many were from rural Ontario, and the former Victoria County --- now City of Kawartha Lakes --- was home to at least two dozen of these extraordinary young women. While a number were from Lindsay, others grew up in farming communities in the surrounding townships and were well-acquainted with the people and places which many of us are familiar with to this day. When the call was issued to serve their King and Country in the First World War, these "bluebirds" willingly left their homes and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, traveling to Europe as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
